KIDS CAN CREATE: How to make a ball of wool

This is a video series designed to help children learn how to knit! People often think knitting is hard – but it really is not. Once you get the hang of it, it is a simple and wonderful skill that allows you to create almost anything you can imagine with a simple piece of string!

This video is best suited to children 3-10 years old.

In this video, Marshall, 4 and Willow, 8, learn how to make a small ball of wool by wrapping the wool around their fingers loosely, pinching it off, then continuing to wrap the wool changing the angle slightly every 10-20 times to create a small ball.

Making a ball of wool is useful when:

  • You are making a pompom – your wool will need to fit through a small hole in the pompom maker so you need a small ball
  • You want to knit on the go and your ball of wool is too big
  • Your ball of wool is a mess and you need to tidy it up
  • You are bored and would like to make balls of wool

KIDS CAN CREATE: What is wool? Featuring Marshall, 4 yrs

This is a video series designed to help children learn how to knit! People often think knitting is hard – but it really is not. Once you get the hang of it, it is a simple and wonderful skill that allows you to create almost anything you can imagine with a simple piece of string!

This video is best suited to children 3-6 years old.

In this video, Marshall, 4, helps explain what wool is, what wool feels and looks like and some fun things we can do with wool.

Understanding what wool is and the basic way to handle wool – such as identifying things around the house that are knit from wool, making loops with wool, or weaving wool through holes – is a very important step to understanding knitting, especially for little ones.

This video suggests some simple activities – to do these you will need any kind of string, cardboard, and something you can poke holes the size of your pinky finger with.
