How to start knitting from the very beginning

Lots of people have asked me questions such as:

  • What knitting needles should I buy?
  • What wool should I buy?
  • What is a tension square?
  • What is needle gauge?
  • What are some patterns that are good for beginners?

In this video I talk through some of these basics of starting to knit.

Once you have all your materials, be sure to check out my video tutorials for how to cast on; how to knit stitch and how to purl stitch and you are on your way!

How to do purl stitch

I did a series of how-to knit videos with The Australian Women’s Weekly Books and here is my video tutorial for purl stitch.

The purl stitch is the reverse of the knit stitch – once you have mastered the basic knit stitch it will take a bit of practice to get used to purl, but it really is no more difficult. With purl you will be able to create stocking stitch and a range of other great stitches such as ribbing and moss stitch!

How to do the knit stitch

I did a series of how-to knit videos with The Australian Women’s Weekly Books and here is my video tutorial for the knit stitch.

The knit stitch is the base stitch of all knitting – master this and you can easily complete many beginner patterns!

How to cast on

I did a series of how-to knit videos with The Australian Women’s Weekly Books and here is my video tutorial for casting on.

Casting on is one of the most important skills – as you really can’t start knitting without it. Here, I show you a very simple cast-on method that uses the same principle as a regular knit stitch. My grandmother taught me this method when I was around seven and I have sworn by it since!
