The purl stitch is the reverse of the knit stitch – once you have mastered the basic knit stitch it will take a bit of practice to get used to purl, but it really is no more difficult.
With purl you will be able to create stocking stitch and a range of other great stitches such as ribbing and moss stitch!
Purl stitch for beginners: tips and instructions
Hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand (or right hand if you are left-handed).
Push the right (left) hand needle through the front stitch (the stitch at the pointed end of your needle), from back to front, ensuring the working wool is in front of the needle going through.
Wind the working wool over the opposite needle and then underneath to form a loop.
Pull this loop through the first stitch.
Slip the first stitch off of the left (right) needle and onto the opposite needle.
Repeat these steps for all of the stitches.
