How to knit stitch

The knit stitch is the base stitch of all knitting – master this and you can easily complete many beginner patterns!

Hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand (or right hand if you are left-handed).


Push the right (left) hand needle through the first stitch on the needle (the one near the pointed end), from front to back, ensuring the working wool (the wool that is attached to the ball) is behind the needle going through.


Wind the working wool under the opposite needle and then over the top and and backwards to form a loop.


Pull this look through the first stitch.


Slip the first stitch off the left (right) needle and then onto the opposite needle.


Repeat steps for each stitch.
